Cyclic excretion of urinary oestrogens in female tamarins (Saguinus oedipus)

Abstract: Summary. Urine was collected from 6 female cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus o. oedipus) and urinary oestrone and oestradiol concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. Oestrone was excreted at 50-fold higher concentrations than oestradiol. Five females showed patterns of regular oestrone cyclicity, with a mean peak-to-peak oestrone cycle of 23\m=.\6\m=+-\1\m=.\2days. Levels of oestradiol tended to vary with levels of oestrone excretion, but peaks were less pronounced and more variable. The sixth female, dia… Show more

“…Another indication that AST's excretion profile reflects an ovarian cycle is the interval of 28 days between the oestradiol nadirs, which is within the range of the cycle lengths (18-31 days) reported for other species of the genus Saguinus [16,17].…”

“…This explains the success of Ziegler et al [5] in using measurements of oestrone conju gates to ascertain ovarian cyclicity and preg nancy in female Goeldi's monkeys. Conju gated oestrone was similarly the predomi nant form of oestrogen in urine in female owl monkeys, Aotus trivirgatus [12], and in most female callitrichid monkeys, such as the cotton-top tamarin, Saguinus oedipus [7,13,14], The exceptions to date are the fe male common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus [7,8], and the pregnant female red-bellied tamarin, Saguinus labiatus [15], in which conjugated oestradiol was the most abun dant urinary oestrogen.
