Cyclodextrin-Modified Capillary Electrophoresis:  Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Contaminated Soils

Abstract: A separation method using cyclodextrin-modified capillary electrophoresis has been developed for analysis of the 16 U.S. EPA priority pollutant PAHs in contaminated soils. In this procedure, a mixture of negatively charged sulfobutyl ether-β-cyclodextrin (SBβCD) and neutral methylβ-cyclodextrin (MβCD) was added to the running buffer, and separation was effected on the basis of differential distribution (partitioning) of the PAH components between the two CD types. Satisfactory separation of all 16 PAHs was ach… Show more

“…Compared with the sweeping method, the FESI method resulted in 10-fold reduction in detection limits for naphthalene, 20-fold reduction for pyrene, phenanthrene, and fluorine. Also, the detection limit of the present FESI method is almost at the same level or lower than those reported in many papers [14,25].…”

“…Moreover, several other additives were reported, and they included a bile salt surfactant [11], a high-concentration ionic surfactant [12], and a neutral and anionic CD mixture [13]. Among these techniques, CD-modified MEKC (CD-MEKC) has been demonstrated to be an efficient separation method for PAHs [14].…”

“…They obtain baseline separation of 12 hydroxyPAHs with a laserinduced fluorescence (LIF) detection. Cyclodextrin-aided capillary electrophoretic separation and LIF detection were also used to determine mixtures of the 16 US EPA priority pollutants PAHs from contaminated soils [181,182] and the results are comparable to those afforded by HPLC. The indirect fluorescence detection of amino-substituted PAHs in CD-modified MEKC was demonstrated.…”

“…The separation of the 16 EPA priority PAHs using SB-B-CD and methyl-6-CD in EKC was attempted and reported recently [16]. In this dual cyclodextrin system, most of the 16 PAHs were well separated; however, some PAHs were only partially resolved.…”
