Cyclooxygenase-2, P53 and Glucose Transporter-1 as Predictors of Malignancy in the Development of Gallbladder Carcinomas

Abstract: Gallbladder carcinoma is the fi fth most common malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract. e absolute characteristics of the disease are the high mortality rate due to the late discovery of a tumor and the low therapeutic possibilities except by surgical intervention. In oncology we can predict the outcome of the disease with a combination of classical standard clinico/pathological parameters (stage of the tumors, diff erentiation) and the intrinsic genetic and biochemical properties of the tumor. Such intrinzi… Show more

“…The expression of COX-2 is induced by several stimuli, including growth factors, inflammation and cytokines. COX-2 is upregulated in numerous types of cancer (34). EGFR is the cell-surface receptor for epidermal growth factors and is a growth factor involved in the regulation of cell growth, proliferation and differentiation.…”

“…(1) patients with histological diagnosis of GBC; (2) GBC patients with no other coexisting malignancies; (3) patients not receiving other treating processes before recruitment; (4) patients with available follow-up data and overall clinical data: and (5) patients aged >18 years. The exclusion criteria included (1) patients exhibiting acute infection or chronic active inflammatory disease; (2) patients with anemia, collagen diseases and others regarding the hematological mechanism; (3) patients having taken anticoagulant treatment or albumin transfusions before receiving the treatment; (5) patients exhibiting perioperative surgery-associated mortality. Clinical data within 30 days before surgery for 202 of the patients were included.…”

“…Gallbladder cancer (GBC) has been the commonest malignant biliary tract tumor, taking up 80%-95% of biliary cancer patients [1]. CBG refers to the fifth commonest malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract, taking up ~ 1% of all cancers in our nation [2]. Because of insufficient effective diagnostic markers, single treatment choices, late diagnosis, and atypical symptoms, the prognosis of GBC remains ineffective [3].…”

“…A decrease in the expression of hMLH1 and hMSH2 occurs in patients with adenomas and adenocarcinomas. The decrease in the expression of hMLH1 was observed in patients with microsatellite instability (MSI) in CRC [28]. So, inactivation of the genes taking part in MMR lead to MSI in CRC.…”

“…The expression level of COX-2 is elevated in many cancers (e.g. in gallbladder carcinomas along with increased angiogenesis) [28]. PGH 2 , the product of COX-2, is converted by prostaglandin E2 synthase into prostaglandin E2 (PGE 2 ), which can stimulate cancer progression.…”
