CYFRA 21-1 in urine: a diagnostic marker for endometriosis?

Abstract: Diagnostic workup of endometriosis usually involves laparoscopic inspection and histological examination of biopsies. Unequivocal laboratory parameters for this ailment have not been available in routine diagnostic evaluations thus far. In this study, we examined urine concentrations of cytokeratin 19 (CYFRA 21-1), a structural protein specific for epithelia. We performed immunoassays for CYFRA 21-1 in urine samples from women afflicted with endometriosis throughout their menstrual cycle. We observed a signifi… Show more

“…Moreover, AFP is reported to be elevated during some specific period or situation of pregnancy [ 25 ]. Furthermore, diseases specifically affecting women, such as benign uterus diseases, pelvis inflammatory diseases, or benign breast tissue diseases, are involved in the activation of epithelial cells [ 26 , 27 ]. All these diseases may cause elevation of epithelium-associated tumour markers in noncancerous diseases.…”

“…Consequently, many researchers strive to diagnose endometriosis with the use of non-invasively available biological materials: plasma, serum, endometrium bioptates, and urine. However, these studies are limited in terms of small groups of patients, which translates into a low quality of obtained data (16,17) .…”

“…W związku z tym liczni badacze podejmują próby diagnozowania endometriozy z wykorzystaniem dostępnych nieinwazyjnie materiałów biologicznych: osocza, surowicy, bioptatów endometrium, moczu. Badania są jednak limitowane małymi grupami chorych, co przekłada się na niską jakość uzyskiwanych danych (16,17) .…”
