Cynosurus mottle virus, a virus affecting grasses in New Zealand

Abstract: Cynosurus mottle virus (CyMV) was detected in four species of grasses from New Zealand pastures. CyMV from New Zealand was serologically related to, but not identical with, CyMV from the U.K. The virus had a dilution end point of 10-7 and a thermal inactivation temperature of 75°c; the isometric virlls particles were 28 nm in diameter. The virus was transmitted mechanically from grasses to oats, and from oats to oats by the aphid Rhopalosip/zunz padi L. Thirteen species of Gramineae, mainly Festucoids, were su… Show more

“…In addition, SoMV has been reported to be transmitted by the onion thrips Thrips tabaci [ 27 ]. A bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi has been identified as the vector of CnMoV in New Zealand, where no beetle vector has been recorded [ 28 ]. A blueberry aphid Illinoia pepperi is the only known vector of Blueberry shoestring virus (BSSV) [ 29 ].…”

“…For example, in a pasture species trial, King et al (1982) found that black beetle decreased the ryegrass component and white fringed weevil (Graphognathus leucoloma) reduced clover yield. Another example of this type of biotic interaction is that the stress response by plants to root loss can improve food quality for aboveground pests like aphids (Masters et al 1993), which in turn are vectors of plant viruses (e.g., Mohamed 1978). However, in some situations, damage by one pest may render plants an unsuitable food resource for another.…”

“…There is little information available regarding the length of time the virus has been present in New Zealand. A comprehensive nationwide survey in 1976 found no evidence of RgMV infection, suggesting that RgMV has probably become established within the last 2 decades (Mohamed 1978).…”
