CYP19A1 genetic polymorphisms may be associated with obesity-related phenotypes in Chinese women

Abstract: The CYP19A1 protein (aromatase) plays a critical role in estrogen biosynthesis and thus affects body fat distribution and regulation. Object: To examine the relationship between genetic polymorphisms of the CYP19A1 gene and obesity-related phenotypes, body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Subjects: In total, 1241 Chinese women, who were recruited as community controls for a population-based case-control study of breast cancer. Methods: Nineteen haplotype tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (h… Show more

“…In a study of postmenopausal Caucasian women not using postmenopausal hormones, Paynter et al (24) reported that the rs28566535 C allele (5.1% of that study population) was not associated with risk of endometrial cancer nor with plasma steroid hormone levels. The minor C allele of rs28566535 has a much higher frequency (34.3%) in our study, which agrees with the frequency of this allele reported in a populationbased case-control study of breast cancer we conducted in Shanghai (38).…”

“…Young Korean women havea more westernized body shape than young Korean Chinese women. BMI and WHR or waist circumference can be used as indexes for overall obesity and central abdominal obesity to predict high risk behavior [6,23]. The average WHR of both groups was similar to that reported by Choung and Park [24]; however, it was lower than that reported in the 2001 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey [17].…”

“…Most of those related to endometrial cancer are in an area of linkage disequilibrium (designated as Block 4 [35]) which includes the Ins/Del and the [TTTA] n repeat reported here. A study in China [36] found associations between BMI and variants in genotypes in Block 4 in healthy women, although different polymorphisms were studied and the association was found only in premenopausal women in that study.…”
