Cystic dystrophy of heterotopic pancreas in stomach: radiologic and pathologic correlation

Abstract: Cystic dystrophy of heterotopic pancreas is a rare condition that means cystic changes of normal pancreatic tissue, placed in unusual locations, commonly in the duodenal wall. We report a case of CDHP in stomach, histologically confirmed after surgery. We show the correlation between radiological and anatomopathological findings, and also review the current literature about reported cases of this exceptional disease.

“…3), and is usually located in the submucosa. Cyst formation in a heterotopic pancreas is caused by secondary changes in the pancreatic tissue, including pseudocyst formation or cystic dystrophy (8). A heterotopic pancreas may result in epigastric pain or upper GI bleeding from irritation or ulceration of the adjacent mucosa by pancreatic secretions.…”

“…Recently, several case reports of heterotopic pancreas of the stomach have been published in the English language literature [3,4,5,6,7]. However, heterotopic pancreas of the stomach was already studied in a very large series by Yamagiwa et al [8, 9].…”

“…A more pressing concern, however, is that pancreatic heterotopia with cystic degeneration may resemble a tumor with cystic degeneration, making proper characterization of the lesion necessary. 9 We present a case of a gastric SEL, later determined to be heterotopic pancreas with cystic degeneration, excised by STER.…”
