Cystofilobasidiales, a new order of basidiomycetous yeasts

Abstract: The order Cystofilobasidiales is described for teleomorphic basidiomycetous yeasts with holobasidia and teliospores. Their septa have dolipores, but lack parenthesomes. D-GhJCUrOnate, nitrate and nitrite are assimilated and myoinositol is usually assimilated. Coenzyme Q has 8 or 10 isoprenologues. 255 and 18s rDNA sequence analysis indicates a monophyletic branch within the Tremellomycetidae of the Hymenomycetes. Cystofilobasidium is the type genus.

“…These partial SSU rDNA sequences were most similar (>98%) to M. frigida and M. psychrophilia in BLAST searches of GenBank. Likewise, analysis of 600 nucleotides of large subunit (LSU) rDNA (data not shown) supported this relationship; DNA sequences associated with subfossil U. cylindrica were nearly identical (differing in only one nucleotide) to those of M. frigida (Fell et al 1999). The partial SSU rDNA and partial LSU sequences flanked and overlapped the ITS region amplified from 94-G-11 and three other subfossil-associated sequences by 200 and 50 nucleotides, respectively.…”

“…In spite of different culture pigmentation, a close relationship had been observed between Cystofilobasidium capitatum and Cystofilobasidium lari-marini in molecular phylogenetic studies using 26S rDNA sequences (Fell et al, 1999). Moreover, Cystofilobasidium capitatum and Cystofilobasidium lari-marini are also very similar with respect to basidial morphology (Fell & Statzell-Tallman, 1992), septal pore ultrastructure and nutritional profiles (Table 3 and Fig.…”

“…Cystofilobasidium ferigula and the other species in the genus assimilate inositol, glucuronate, nitrate and nitrite, possess a CoQ 8 system (Fell et al, 1999) and have xylose in the cell walls (Fell et al, 1999). Moreover, Cystofilobasidium ferigula does not utilize any of the aromatic compounds tested (Table 2).…”
