Cytochemical Observations on Proteins, Alkaline and Acid Phosphatases, Adenosine Triphosphatase, and 5′‐Nucleotidase in Chick Liver Cell Cultures Infected with Trichomonas vaginalis*, †

Abstract: SYNOPSIS. By means of the ninhydrin‐Schiff method for proteins a diffuse reaction as well as one localized in granular inclusions can be shown in the cytoplasm of fibroblasts, epithelial cells, and macrophages in trypsin‐dispersed chick liver cell cultures. Nuclei and nucleoli also take the specific stain. A progressive loss of cytoplasmic and nuclear staining occurs in the fibroblasts in cultures infected with a relatively pathogenic strain of T. vaginalis. A loss occurs in epithelial cells in advanced stage… Show more

“…gallinae (1) and T . vaginalis (34)(35)(36) seem not to be restricted to trichomonad or even to protozoan infections; comparable changes have been found also in cultures and host tissues infected with bacterial and viral agents, and can be caused by a variety of chemicals (for pertinent references, see [34][35][36]. Evidently, the cells can respond in a limited number of ways to an unfavorable environment or to injury.…”

“…The method of setting up the cultures on cover glasses in Leighton tubes was essentially like that recommended by Honigberg et al (19), after Huff et al (22). As in all previous studies (1, 6, 19,[34][35][36], the nutrient medium (SSE) consisted of 80% BSS, 15% inactivated normal chicken serum, and 5% CEEw. Inocula of 1.3-1.5 X 10' cells were employed in 1 ml for starting each of the cultures of LBL line cells, 1.1-1.3 x 10' for MB line, and 0.8-1.0 X 10' for MLG line.…”

“…The sequence of events has a more obvious causal connection in the trypanosome, but in the malaria parasite their causal connection remains hypothetical. Similarly, other protozoal parasites (Babesia, Leishmania, and Entamoeba) are known to absorb lipids, and some (Entamoeba and the trichomonads [54,75]) are known to secrete hydrolytic enzymes. These hydrolytic enzymes have an importance in the pathogenesis of protozoal disease which is probably greatly underestimated; however, this aspect is not sufficiently close to the present topic to be pursued further in this review.…”
