“…Some of them show an increase in genetic damage (Go´mez-Arroyo et al, 2000;Garaj-Vrhovac and Zeljezic, 2002) while others find no differences between these populations and those not exposed to these compounds (Scarpato et al, 1996;Pastor et al, 2001).…”

“…The same authors, in another study, detected increased levels of DNA damage using comet assay after 1 day of spraying with mixtures of organophosphates, pyrethroids, and carbamates [Lebailly et al, 1998b]. However, there are studies with negative reports [Scarpato et al, 1996;Lucero et al, 2000;Piperakis et al, 2003] in flower and vegetable cultivators exposed to pesticides. Such negative reports in contrast to ours, could be related with a shorter exposure time, differences in cell processing for the comet assay, and/or better protective measures used by the studied population.…”

“…It is estimated that 80% of the total pesticides consumed in Pakistan are used for the protection of cotton crop, from July to October of the growing period though cotton crop accounts for less than 12% of the total cultivated area of the country [Alam, 2006]. Different studies have been conducted in human populations occupationally exposed to pesticides, although the results obtained are conflicting [Scarpato et al, 1996;Venegas et al, 1998;Gómez-Arroyo et al, 2000;Lucero et al, 2000]. One of the possible causes of these divergent data could be the seasonal variations in the levels of pesticide exposure [Carbonell et al, 1995].…”
