Cytogenetic studies on some Scorzonera L. s.l. (Asteraceae) taxa from Turkey

Abstract: In the present study, chromosome morphology of 32 Scorzonera L. taxa, including 19 species endemic to Turkey, was analyzed. The plant materials were collected from different natural populations of Turkey between 2005 and 2011. The classification of chromosomes, the length of the long and short arm, haploid chromosome length, arm ratio, and relative chromosomal length were measured by software image analyses. The basic chromosome numbers were determined as x = 6 and x = 7. Two types of ploidy levels were observ… Show more

“…There is strong indication that the Scorzonerinae (as well as Scorzonera s.l.) are separated into lineages with different basic chromosome numbers (x = 6 and 7: Mavrodiev et al 2004;Winfield et al 2006;Altinordu et al 2015) and that the Scorzonera clades differ in pollen morphology (Askerova 1970;Blackmore 1981Blackmore , 1982Blackmore , 1986; Díaz de la Guardia and Blanca 1985;Nazarova 1997;Mavrodiev et al 2004;Türkmen et al 2010;Pinar et al 2016), but both features seem to be homoplastic. Achene and pappus morphology, but also achene anatomy, are significant in the systematics of the Asteraceae in general and the Cichorieae in particular (e.g.…”

“…A review of the literatures indicates that only basic chromosome numbers of x= 6 and x=7 and mostly 2n=14 have been counted in species of Scorzonera (Nazarova 1997, Safavi 1999, Martïn et al 2012, Altinordu et al 2015. Therefore the basic chromosome number in Scorzonera seems stable.…”

“…The review of the previous reports as well as the karyotype investigations in Scorzonera species from Armenia and middle Asia by Nazarova (1997) also confirmed the prevalence of metacentric chromosomes in this genus. Karyomorphological studies on Scorzonera species from flora of Turkey (Martïn et al 2012, Altinordu et al 2015 and Iberian Peninsula (Díaz De La Guardia and Blanca 1987) also rarely exhibited asymmetric karyotypes.…”
