Cytokinin and gibberellin activate SaMADS A, a gene apparently involved in regulation of the floral transition in Sinapis alba

Abstract: SummaryIn plants of Sinapis alba induced to¯ower by one long day, the MADS box gene, SaMADS A, is expressed initially in the central corpus (L3 cells) of the shoot apical meristem (SAM), about 1.5±2 days before initiation of the ®rst¯oral meristem. We have combined a physiological approach by testing the effects of three putative¯oral signals on SaMADS A expression in the SAM of S. alba plants with a transgenic approach using Arabidopsis thaliana plants. A single application of a low dose of a cytokinin or a g… Show more

“…GA promotes SD flowering by activating the floral meristem-identity genes LFY and SOC1 (36)(37)(38)(39), via a mechanism that is DELLA-dependent (40). Because ctr1-1, like ga1-3, exhibits DELLA-dependent delays in flowering time, we investigated the possibility that ctr1-1 might delay SD flowering by maintaining relatively low levels of LFY and SOC1 transcripts.…”

“…The GA-DELLA system regulates the timing of floral initiation via effects on the levels of transcripts of the floral meristem identity genes LEAFY (LFY) and SUPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION CONSTANS 1 (SOC1). In particular, DELLAs delay flowering in short-day photoperiods (SDs) by repressing the up-regulation of LFY and SOC1 transcripts (35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40). DELLAs subsequently regulate the development of flowers themselves, via transcriptional repression of the floral homeotic genes APETALA3, PISTILLATA, and AGAMOUS (41).…”

“…Endogenous cytokinins might therefore play a role in the control of cell division during the floral transition in Arabidopsis and act as a component of the floral stimulus of leaf origin. However, so far, little is known about their action on flowering gene expression in Arabidopsis, although in S. alba cytokinins activate expression of SaMADSA, the ortholog of Arabidopsis SOC1 (Bonhomme et al 2000).…”

“…SaMADSA is believed to be a critical gene for floral evocation in S. alba since (i) it is the ortholog of the A. thaliana SOC1 gene, which is considered as a part of a transcriptional cascade ultimately leading to activation of the floral meristem identity genes LFY and AP1, in the SAM (Borner et al 2000;Lee et al 2000;Samach et al 2000); and (ii) constitutive expression of SaMADSA greatly hastens flowering in A. thaliana in both LDs and SDs and causes photoperiod-independent flowering in the strict SD plant Maryland Mammoth tobacco (Bonhomme et al 2000;Borner et al 2000).…”

“…Temporal coordination of the two events might be essential for the completion of floral evocation, as activation of SaMADSA alone is insufficient to bring about the floral transition (Bonhomme et al 2000). In addition, spatial coordination of events across the SAM might be critical since the up-regulation of SaMADSA occurs in the central L3 cells located just beneath the cells of the changing CSF.…”
