Cytokinin Receptors Are Involved in Alkamide Regulation of Root and Shoot Development in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Alkamides and N-acilethanolamides are a class of lipid compounds related to animal endocannabinoids of wide distribution in plants. We investigated the structural features required for alkamides to regulate plant development by comparing the root responses of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seedlings to a range of natural and synthetic compounds. The length of the acyl chain and the amide moiety were found to play a crucial role in their biological activity. From the different compounds tested, N-isobutyl d… Show more

“…6) agrees with previous reports of high levels of cytokinins in shoot apexes detected with the help of reporter constructs (Gordon et al 2007;López-Bucio et al 2007;Cheng et al 2013) and immunohistochemical approaches (Rijavec et al 2011) in vitro and in vivo.…”

“…In those studies, glucuronidase activity (resulting from expression of a GUS reporter gene controlled by the cytokinin-sensitive ARR5 promoter) was detected in the root tips and central cylinder (Aloni et al 2005;López-Bucio et al 2007) in accordance with the present experiments, where a high level of zeatin was observed in the root tips (Fig. 10b, c, e, f) and in the region of the central cylinder of differentiation Fig.…”

“…Expressions of AHKs, AHPs and ARRs have been found to be altered in CTK response mutants and over-expression lines of CTK signalling components (Sweere et al 2001;To et al 2004;Lopez-Bucio et al 2007). Since the brx-2 mutant is altered in CTK-induced response, the expression of AHKs, AHPs and ARRs were examined in the mutant root and found to be altered by CTK in a manner essentially similar to that in the WT seedlings (Supplemental Fig.…”

“…Mutations of AHK, AHP or ARR, lead to alterations in root architecture (Higuchi et al 2004;Nishimura et al 2004;To et al 2004;Mason et al 2005;Gonzalez-Rizzo et al 2006;RieXer et al 2006;Lopez-Bucio et al 2007). Other mutants, such as cyr, stp and cnr1, have shown CTK resistance in the root growth inhibition assay (Baskin et al 1995;Deikman and Ulrich 1995;Laxmi et al 2006).…”
