Cytologic features of angioleiomyoma: Cytologic‐histologic study of 10 cases

Abstract: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) features in 10 angioleiomyomas (ALM) were evaluated and correlated to histological features and clinical data. The tumors developed in the skin or subcutaneous tissue of the lower extremities (eight), the shoulder (one), and the lower arm (one). Eight tumors were painful or tender. Cytological specimens showed moderate or sparse cellularity. The most frequent findings were uniform spindle cells, seen in nine smears. In eight of these, the spindle cells were admixed with smooth musc… Show more

“…Duhig and Ayer (12) suggest that proliferation of smooth muscle within a haemangioma produces a vascular leiomyoma and that further proliferation produces a simple leiomyoma. Most authors agree that (1,4,9) vascular leiomyoma arises from veins. These lesions may be hamartomas.…”

“…Minor trauma (7–10), venous stasis and hormonal changes especially that of oestrogen have been proposed as aetiological features. The presence of chronic inflammatory cell infiltrates (1,2) in some lesions support the venous stasis theory.…”

“…3,6,14 Histologically, the tumor consists of uniform, compact, spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells, with cylindrical nuclei surrounding vascular channels. 16 They are further characterized as either solid, cavernous, or venous types. 3 Of the 8 specimens, 4 were consistent with the subclassification of angioleiomyoma.…”

“…Pain and/or tenderness may be the presenting feature in 45% to 70% of all cases [1,2,3,4,5,6,7]. Patient ages in the symptomatic group and in the asymptomatic group did not differ significantly.…”
