Cytology of anaplastic giant cell carcinoma of the thyroid with osteoclast‐like giant cells—A case report

Abstract: Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid is known for its highly aggressive behaviour and rapid spread. While the giant cell variant is a well recognized morphologic pattern, the presence of osteoclast-like giant cells is a rare occurrence. We report a case of anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid with focal presence of osteoclast-like giant cells occurring in an elderly male patient, diagnosed on aspiration cytology.

“…ATC is defined as a high-grade pleomorphic and epithelial-derived malignancy with epithelial and spindle features. [112][113][114][115][116][117][118] Cytological samples show variable cellularity, but most FNA cases are moderately or highly cellular ( Fig. 9).…”

“…Within our large series of 562 evaluated cases, we observed this phenotype in 37 (6.6%) patients. Of note, multinucleated giant cells have been reported in a wide variety of neoplasms from many anatomic sites, both in the skin and in visceral organs, including pancreas, bladder, lung, breast, gastrointestinal tract, thyroid and gallbladder …”

“…3 The diagnosis was made with FNAC cytology is so far made only in 4 cases reported in medical literature. [1][2][3] Hence this case was presented to highlight the significance of cytological diagnosis using simple FNAC technique which will aid in determining the treatment plan.…”
