Cytomegalovirus antibody and vascular pathology in renal transplant recipients

Abstract: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been linked with vascular pathology and is a common complication of renal transplantation. We addressed whether CMV seropositivity influences vascular pathology several years after transplant. Levels of CMV antibody increased with age, were higher in transplant recipients than healthy controls (P < 0.001), and correlated with vascular endothelial function measured by flow mediated-dilation of the brachial artery (FMD). However, the optimal general linear model predicting FMD included … Show more

“…Our data suggest that loss of FcRγ may be a better indicator of NK cell adaptation to CMV infection than NKG2C. High levels of CMV‐specific antibodies in RTR may reflect episodic subclinical reactivations and therefore a higher burden of CMV, in accordance with the higher frequency of CMV detection in transplant recipients . Hence we use RTR to study the clinical and immunological footprints of CMV.…”

“…Median time posttransplant was 5 (2‐16) years. Age‐matched healthy adult controls were recruited through local advertisements . Plasma was aliquoted and stored at −80°C, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were separated by Ficoll‐hypaque centrifugation and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen.…”

“…Age‐matched controls ( n = 72) were recruited through local advertisements. Clinical assessments including blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and brachial artery flow mediated dilatation (FMD) were performed as described previously within 6 months of blood collection in 70 RTR. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated by density centrifugation and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen.…”
