CYTOPROTECTIVE, ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTI‐INFLAMMATORY EFFECTS OF ESSENTIAL OIL AND MAJOR TERPENES OF Satureja macrostema IN ENDOTHELIAL CELLS

Abstract: Satureja macrostema is a Mexican medicinal plant known as nurite, it is used in decoctions and infusions for the treatment of stomach pain and liver and intestinal diseases, which present inflammatory processes and oxidative stress. In our working group, the in vitro antioxidant activity of the essential oil of aerial parts of S. macrostema obtained by hydrodistillation was determined, and the main volatile terpenes present in this oil were identified (limonene, linalool, menthone, pulegone, thymol and caryoph… Show more

“…The DPPH (2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity was performed using the method of Torres‐Martínez et al . (2017) with modifications. The essential oil (100 μL, at different concentrations of 0.1 and 1% in methanol) was mixed with 2 mL of DPPH solution (0.5 mM).…”

“…One such possibility may be the use of herbal and botanical products like essential oils (EOs) and plant extracts exhibiting desired biological activities (Brah et al, 2023; Li et al, 2022; Manzur et al, 2023; Shen et al, 2022). For example, the potent antibacterial (Cazella et al, 2019; Ghavam et al, 2020; Man et al, 2019), antifungal (Gakuubi et al, 2017; Nazzaro et al, 2017), insecticidal (Kweka et al, 2011; Owolabi et al, 2014), acaricidal (Djebir et al, 2019), cytotoxic (Khang et al, 2020; Russo et al, 2015), antioxidant (Cardoso‐Ugarte & Sosa‐Morales, 2021; Torres‐Martínez et al, 2018), and antidiabetic (Siahbalaei et al, 2020) properties of EOs have been investigated. EOs (also called volatile or ethereal oils) are the aromatic oily liquids liberated from plant material (e.g., seeds, leaves, buds, flower, barks, wood, fruits, and roots; Burt, 2004).…”
