Cytotoxic Activity Evaluation of Eriocaulon Cinereum R.BR. On Hela and Vero Cell Lines

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of the extracts and fractions of Eriocaulon cinereum against HeLa and Vero cell lines, which represent cervical cancer and normal cells, respectively. In addition, a phytochemical screening was carried out to determine the chemicalconstituents in the extracts and the active fractions.Materials and Methods: The extracts of E. cinereum were obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, andmethanol, successively. “…Based on the literature, this plant can be developed as an anticancer agent with minimal toxicity. [ 2 3 4 ] Information about E. cinereum is still minimal compared to other species of the genus. With many similarities to E. cinereum , Eriocaulon sieboldianum was used as supportive therapy for cancer treatment in China.…”

“…These results follow previous studies of MCF-7 or T47D cells, in line with the hypothesis proposed in this study. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26] The compound selectivity index, which was also determined in this study, showed that the selectivity of compounds in normal Vero cells was 2.157, which is classified as being in a good category with a value >2. This shows that the compound is selective and can differentiate between cancer cells and normal cells.…”

“…23,24 However, research using this species on HeLa cervical cancer cells has only been done at the fraction level, with the best IC50 being in the ethyl acetate fraction with an IC50 of 235.65 μg/mL. 25,26 Based on previous research, we hypothesized that the subfraction and isolates from this fraction would have better activity than the crude extract on HeLa…”
