Medicinal herbs are one of the imperative sources of drugs all over the world. Star anise (Illicium verum), an evergreen, medium-sized tree with star-shaped fruit, is an important herb with wide distribution throughout southwestern parts of the Asian continent. Besides its use as spice in culinary, star anise is one of the vital ingredients of the Chinese medicinal herbs and is widely known for its antiviral effects. It is also the source of the precursor molecule, shikimic acid, which is used in the manufacture of oseltamivir (Tamiflu ® ), an antiviral medication for influenza A and influenza B. Besides, several other molecules with numerous biological benefits including the antiviral effects have been reported from the same plant. Except the antiviral potential, star anise possesses a number of other potentials such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, anthelmintic, insecticidal, secretolytic, antinociceptive, antiinflammatory, gastroprotective, sedative properties, expectorant and spasmolytic, and estrogenic effects. This review aimed to integrate the information on the customary attributes of the plant star anise with a specific prominence on its antiviral properties and the phytochemical constituents along with its clinical aptness. Two analytical methods were developed in this study for direct and fast chemical investigation of authentic Copaifera oleoresins (COR) and commercial products. Polydimethylsiloxane microfiber coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC/MS) showed the best results for oleoresin qualitative analysis, setting the following extraction conditions: equilibrium time of 15 min, extraction time of 30 min, extraction temperature at 60°C and constant stirring of 400 rpm. Sesquiterpenes α-copaene, β-elemene, β-caryophyllene and trans-α-bergamotene were found in all investigated samples. Quantitative analysis by gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) measured the content of the four sesquiterpenes in all samples. Qualitative and quantitative results showed important differences between COR of distinct species and commercial products. Data regarding the volatile composition of C. oblongifolia and C. trapezifolia oleoresins were first presented in this study and two new analytical methods were reported for direct and fast qualitative and quantitative analysis of COR.

Abstract. Yarmoohammadi M, Talebi SM, Nohooji MG. 2017. Infraspecific variations in essential oil and glandular trichomes in Nepeta heliotropifolia. Biodiversitas 18: 964-970. Nepeta heliotropifolia Lam. (Labiatae) is one of the perennial medicinal and aromatic plants, naturally grows in different regions of Iran. The essential oil composition of aerial parts and also the micromorphology and distribution of foliar trichomes of N. heliotropifolia from two different regions of Iran were studied. The extracted essential oils were significantly composed of caryophyllene oxide and phytol, which were quantified by GC and identified based on their GC/MS spectra. The essential oil compositions differed greatly with habitat as well as former investigations. Phytol was quantified between 0.75-10. 29% of the total essential oil, but caryophyllene oxide was quantified between 3.90-12.17% of the total essential oil. Trichomes investigations showed that leaves bear an indumentum of glandular and non-glandular hairs. Two main kinds of glandular trichomes were observed; peltate and capitate. The numbers of capitate and peltate trichomes varied between populations. Such great differences in the essential oil composition may be attributed to chemotype creation and also an adaptation of these populations to particular habitats.
