Cytotoxic Cholestane and Pregnane Glycosides from Tribulus macropterus

Abstract: The methanol extract of the whole parts of Tribulus macropterus Boiss. (family Zygophyllaceae) showed cytotoxic activity against a human tumour cell line (hepatocyte generation 2, HepG2) (IC 50 = 2.9 μg/ml). The n-butanolic fraction obtained from successive fractionation of the methanolic extract exhibited activity against HepG2 (IC 50 = 2.6 μg/ml). Therefore, this fraction was subjected to separation using different chromatographic techniques. Five compounds, 1Ð5, were isolated and identified as: (22S,25S)-16… Show more

“…3‐ O ‐beta‐ d ‐xylopyranosides, a class of triterpene glycosides, are present in Cassia auriculata (Sanghi et al., 2000). The methanol extract of Tribulus macropterus and its isolated compound β‐ d ‐xylopyranoside are cytotoxic to human tumor cell lines (Abdel‐Hameed el et al., 2007). 3‐ O ‐beta‐ d ‐xylopyranoside isolated from C. dahurica is effective against HepG2 cell line by regulating protein expression of bcl‐2 family (Tian et al., 2006).…”

“…An investigation of the antioxidant activity using a DPPH assay reported a free radical scavenging activity of 42.7% at a concentration of 1 mg/mL [30]. The cytotoxic activity of T. macropterus was previously investigated against the cancer cell line HepG2 with an IC50 of 2.9 μg/mL [32].…”

“…. Other chromatographic techniques such as thin layer chromatography (TLC) , or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with different detectors like refractive index detector (RI) , evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) or mass spectrometry (MS) detector have been also applied successfully for the determination, identification and quantification of cyclitols.…”
