Cytotoxic Effect of Caralluma fimbriata Against Human Colon Cancer Cells

Abstract: Aim: The present study was designed to examine the cytotoxic effects of ethanolic leaf extract of Caralluma fimbriata in the COLO 320 cell line. Materials and Method: The anti-proliferative effects were evaluated using the MTT assay. The COLO 320 cells were treated with different concentrations of the leaf extract of Caralluma (100 -300 µg/ml) for 24 h. The cell viability and IC 50 was calculated from the cytotoxicity. The morphology of the Caralluma treated cells, control, and positive control were observed u… Show more

“…Many plant products are useful in diabetes mellitus, anxiety, cancer and many such health problems. [20][21][22][23] Apart from an appraisal of product safety and effectiveness, attention should be paid to the potential that these product ingredients may interact with medications. In recent years, dietary carotenoids, especially xanthophylls, have attracted significant attention because of their activities as antioxidants and their roles in preventing cancer and age-related macular degeneration.…”

“…Apart from intake of a product and looking into its safety and effectiveness, attention should be paid to the potential that these product ingredients may interact with medications [17,18] as many plant products are useful in treating various disease conditions such as diabetes mellitus, anxiety, cancer, and many other health problems [19][20][21][22]. Hence, proper care should be taken to administer such products after confirming its effect on various metabolizing enzymes.…”

“…Desired concentrations of test compounds were prepared in 0.1% di-methyl sulfoxide (DMSO) prior to the experiment. 17 The reactant mixtures were diluted with media and cells were treated with different concentration ranges of the extract (3.125-200 μg/mL) and incubated for 72 h respectively which was the optimal treatment time of the extracts in each of the cell lines. The effect induced was also compared to the standard drug used viz.…”
