Daily ingestion of tetracycline residue present in pasteurized milk: a public health problem

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate (qualitatively and quantitatively) the occurrence of antibiotic residue in pasteurized milk in Brazil. Pasteurized milk samples (n = 252) were collected monthly from Nov. 2010-Oct. 2011 from 21 commercial establishments (brands). A screening test (Delvotest® SP-NT) was applied to those samples. In positive (n = 19) and/or suspect samples (n = 24), we quantified oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC) by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array dete… Show more

“…Widespread tetracycline use has fueled concerns that tetracycline residues and their decay products may persist in milk (levels measured at >2mg/L (34)), wastewater (35), the food supply (36), and agricultural settings (37). Tetracycline use is particularly heavy in livestock rearing (37), with estimates that tetracyclines account for two-thirds of total therapeutic antibiotic use in animals (38).…”

“…The bulk milk can be contaminated with the residues of drugs or chemical agents during their extensive use. Therefore, it may lead to resistance development of antibiotic resistance in the pathogen [ 5 ] or allergic reactions in humans [ 6 ].…”
