Dandy-Walker malformation: An incidental finding

Abstract: Dandy–Walker malformation (DWM) is a rare intracranial congenital abnormality that affects the cerebellum and some of its components; particularly cerebellar vermis, fourth ventricle and is characterized by an enlarged posterior fossa. Although there is an extensive list of signs attributed to DWM, final diagnosis is solely dependent on imaging techniques as there are no signs that are characteristic of DWM. This article reports a case with DWM who was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging.

“…MRI usually is performed for detailed evaluation of Dandy-Walker malformation lesions and complications. 4,13 Our patient had absence of obvious external congenital malformation, had brachycephaly instead of occipital prominence, had microcephaly instead of macrocephaly which were suggestive of milder spectrum of DWM i.e. DWV.…”

“…These 4 have one thing in common: the headache was associated with mild head injury and loss of consciousness of 5 to 10 minutes at the same time. Tadakamadla 16 considered that cranial trauma may be a factor responsible for discovering the asymptomatic DWM. In our case, the patient had no history of head injury or cranial trauma and had no history of loss of consciousness.…”

“…Dandy-Walker syndrome is regarded as a relatively rare brain disorder. Sometimes, it is diagnosed early after birth ( 4 ), but sometimes it remains undiagnosed until the later childhood or early adulthood; being shown as a mental retardation, it might be discovered incidentally ( 5 , 6 ). The psychiatric aspect of this syndrome has not been addressed sufficiently.…”
