Darier′s disease in gastric malignancy: An unusual paraneoplastic phenomenon

Abstract: Darier's disease is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis resulting from ATP2A2 gene mutation. A 62-year-old male presented at our outpatient (OPD) with sudden-onset numerous dirty, warty papules over the head, neck, and back since 2 months. Histopathology of the skin lesions revealed acantholytic dyskeratosis suggestive of Darier's disease. He was referred to the gastroenterology department for some gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms where he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the stomach and was subsequently op… Show more

“…We present a patient with erythrodermic DD in the context of advanced lung adenocarcinoma with pleural metastases. Previous reports of paraneoplastic DD are exceedingly rare and have been documented only as acquired conditions in association with gastric adenocarcinoma [3] and undifferentiated metastatic carcinoma [4]. This case report describes a paraneoplastic erythrodermic flare of underlying DD, with improvement of the patient's dermatologic condition in the course of chemotherapy and topical corticosteroid treatment.…”

“…Association of Darier's disease with malignancy has rarely been reported 4 5 . Cases with underlying Hodgkin's lymphoma 4 and stomach cancer 5 are known. It is hypothesised that cancer-producing cytokines such as transforming growth factor-β affecting cellular calcium homeostasis, lead to Darier's disease as a paraneoplastic syndrome 5 .…”
