Dark Triad, Tramps, and Thieves

Abstract: Abstract. Although previous research has demonstrated a link between personality and thieving, research has not yet considered individual differences in impulsivity and the Dark Triad (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism) and commonplace, low-level thefts. In this on-line questionnaire study (N = 254) we examined how the Dark Triad traits and dysfunctional and functional impulsivity provide insights into individual differences in petty theft. Those who admitted having stolen something in their … Show more

“…This distinction roughly accounts for the classification of psychopathic individuals in primary and secondary psychopaths . The latter individuals typically show a dysfunctional impulsivity control which might be reflected in an unrestrained tendency to take resources from the others and their environment . Following our results, the level of ability EI contributes to control this tendency, by enhancing individuals’ capacity to regulate their impulsivity.…”

“…The probability of committing violent crimes has been shown typically high for psychopaths . By contrast, studies on the association of psychopathy with property crimes are scarce . These few studies have suggested that a low impulsivity control, typical of psychopaths, might be the core mechanism accounting for their tendency to commit offenses against property, such as thefts.…”

“…Although all the three traits had a positive correlation with the frequency of aggressive and sexual dreams, when the shared variance between the traits were controlled for in the regression analyses, psychopathy and Machiavellianism emerged as significant positive predictors for aggressive dreams, and psychopathy and narcissism were positive predictors of sexual dreams. Out of the Dark Triad traits, fast life history strategy indicators seem to be related most to psychopathy (Jonason, Koenig, & Tost, 2010;Lyons & Jonason, 2015;Patch & Figueredo, 2017). It is not a surprise that both sexual and aggressive dreams had the strongest association with this trait, suggesting that fast strategies may be reflected in dreams, as the continuity hypothesis would predict, or even rehearsed in dreams, as the simulation theories would predict.…”
