DART‐MS for rapid, preliminary screening of urine for DMAA

Abstract: Dimethylamylamine (DMAA) is a sympathomimetic amine found in weight-loss/workout supplements or used as an appetite suppressant. DMAA is a stimulant that is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Adverse health effects as well as fatalities have been implicated with its use. Direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) is an ambient ionization method that was employed to rapidly identify the presence of DMAA in various samples without any extraction or preparations whatsoever. DMAA was firs… Show more

“…The occurrence of DMAA in various concentrations related to the amount of the geranium extract contained in the dietary supplements has been positively confirmed . However, the real origin of DMAA in supplements labeled “containing geranium extract” has been still unidentified.…”

“…A primary analytical focus in toxicology is determining the presence or absence of drug metabolites in biological samples. Several studies have used DART‐MS to screen urine for metabolites of illegal drugs or drugs banned as dopants (Cody & Laramee, ; Blackledge, ; Gross & Caprioli, ; Gomez‐Rios & Pawliszyn, ; Lesiak et al, ). A common technique for isolating metabolites from urine is solid‐phase microextraction (SPME).…”

“…Test methods complementary to conventional GC‐ or LC‐MS(/MS) methodologies were presented employing ‘direct analysis in real time’ (DART) MS. Both dietary supplements as well as urine samples collected after ingestion of DMAA‐containing products were analyzed by means of DART MS with (LLE or SEP) and without sample preparation . With this method DMAA was identified in neat post‐administration urine samples collected up to 48 h, but in the absence of any method characterization, the detection limit, robustness, etc .…”
