Data-aggregation techniques in sensor networks: A survey

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks consist of sensor nodes with sensing and communication capabilities. We focus on data aggregation problems in energy constrained sensor networks. The main goal of data aggregation algorithms is to gather and aggregate data in an energy efficient manner so that network lifetime is enhanced. In this paper, we present a survey of data aggregation algorithms in wireless sensor networks. We compare and contrast different algorithms on the basis of performance measures such as lifetime, late… Show more

“…The large amount of data expected to be collected by the sensors brings us back to the need for inexpensive analysis, which despite being offered by some high-tech data management and solution companies (KGS Buildings 2014), is not yet widely available or affordable. Considering that an enormous amount of data collected by wireless sensor networks has to be routed to a single managing entity, i.e., the network sink, algorithms for data fusion and aggregation (Rajagopalan and Varshney 2006) are needed to reduce congestion and system overloading (Cao et al 2006). To do so these algorithms collect useful information from the sensors in order to transmit only the useful data to the end point.…”

“…Therefore, communication overhead can be reduced and packet collision can be avoided by decreasing the amount of transmitted messages. A comprehensive survey on data aggregation schemes of wireless sensor networks is presented in [3]. And we will briefly review some representative data aggregation schemes in section II.…”

“…it may ruined other operation metrics such as packet delay, accuracy, fault-tolerance, and security. A secure data aggregation algorithm [5] for sensor networks that is strong to deceitful sensor nodes. The motive of this algorithm is to guarantee the important security requests (like source authentication, data confidentiality & data integrity) as well as to achieve less communication overhead and be fixed with different aggregation functions (like addition, average, maximum, minimum etc..) To effect this security requirements to uses symmetric encryption algorithm and message authentication code (MAC).…”
