Data Link with a High-Power Pulsed Quantum Cascade Laser Operating at the Wavelength of 4.5 µm

Abstract: This article is a short study of the application of high-power quantum cascade lasers and photodetectors in medium-infrared optical wireless communications (OWC). The link range is mainly determined by the transmitted beam parameters and the performance of the light sensor. The light power and the photodetector noise directly determine the signal-to-noise power ratio. This ratio could be maximized in the case of minimizing the radiation losses caused by atmospheric attenuation. It can be obtained by applying b… Show more

“…The entire study is done with this condition so that an upper hand on the losses and other parameters is derived from this study. More insights on the effect of atmospheric turbulence on the performance of FSO links is reported in detail in References 41–46. Aerosols are tiny solid or liquid particles suspended in the air, such as dust, smoke, fog, or haze.…”

“…This is a crucial issue with regard to QCL's switching with dynamic resistance. There is a need to supply lasing structure to ensure population inversion (high resistance-low current-no light) and to emit photons (low resistance-high current-light) [33].…”
