Data Linkage to Explore the Risk of Low Birthweight Associated with Maternal Proximity to Hazardous Waste Sites from the National Priorities List

Abstract: Data from the 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey files were linked with data from the 1990 Environmental Protection Agency National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites to determine whether any relationship existed between living in proximity to hazardous waste sites and low birthweight. The odds ratio for low birthweight versus normal birthweight was 1.03 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 0.98-1.16), and remained at 0.99 (95% CI = 0.86-1.16) when adjusted for maternal age, parity, infant se… Show more

“…However, all 95 percent confidence intervals included values below one. Estimates were slightly higher than, or within range of, results reported in studies with positive results for birth defects (11)(12)(13)(14)(15). This study had a much smaller sample size than these other studies with positive results, and the 95 percent confidence intervals for the largest category, which contained all defects combined, included the fewest values below one.…”

“…Increased risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes have been reported near some individual landfill sites and in multi-site studies (11)(12)(13)(14)(15). However, these studies have never been performed in rural Alaska.…”

“…Zip codes are of irregular shape, and residence in a zip code near a PCB site is certainly not the optimal indicator of exposure. Previous studies of this type (Shaw et al 1992;Sosniak et al 1994) found that merging a large population database with environmental data is an innovative but not very efficient method of assessing the risks of low birth weight related to the environment. On the other hand, the benefits of such investigations are that they are economical, they may be useful for identifying large risks not previously known, and they may be used as hypothesisgenerating studies (Shaw et al 1992).…”

“…The in utero period is one of increased susceptibility to environmental effects, and some studies have suggested that prenatal exposure to environmental toxicants may result in spontaneous abortion, malformations, or low birth weight (Carpenter 1994; Landrigan et al 1999). Results of some other studies, however, have not been consistent with these observations (Baker et al 1988; Croen et al 1997; Fielder et al 2000; Kharrazi et al 1997; Sosniak et al 1994). …”
