Dataset of pharmaceuticals in the Danube and related drinking water wells in the Budapest region

Abstract: The present dataset provides data on the pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) concentrations measured in the Danube and the drinking water abstraction wells (DWAW) in the Budapest region. Grab samples were collected during five periods. One hundred and seven water samples from the Danube and ninety water samples from the relevant DWAWs were analyzed to quantify physical-chemical parameters, trace element concentrations, and one hundred and eleven PhACs, including pharmaceutical derivatives, illicit drugs,… Show more

“…Although sodium diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim were not determined in the drinking water samples from the Ecuadorian cities, some previous studies show their presence in this matrix in other territories. Kondor et al (2021) indicated a maximum concentration of 4.2 ng sodium diclofenac per liter of drinking water in Hungary. Sulfamethoxazole was frequently found in the samples of a study carried out in the United States where 51 emerging compounds were analyzed (Benotti et al, 2009), as well as in the drinking water of cities in Brazil and Spain with values less than 10 ngL −1 (Gros et al, 2012;Monteiro et al, 2017).…”

“…Accumulation in the environment occurs to a point where PhACs are being detected in drinking water sources (Yang et al, 2017). This anomaly has been recorded in the most developed countries of the world, which are believed to be equipped with the latest technology in wastewater treatment, as well as in the less developed countries in the global south (Bexfield et al, 2019;Kondor et al, 2021). For instance, more than 120 PhACs, including carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, hydrocortisone, and meprobamate were recorded during the assessment of ~1,000 principal aquifers across the United States (Bexfield et al, 2019).…”

“…152,153 The use of scCO 2 without co-solvents has also been reported with the ethylene-bridged hybrid (BEH) and BEH 2-EP columns, which showed the best retention and resolution, among other columns. 154,155 The 2-EP stationary phase has been specifically designed to improve the peak shape of strongly basic compounds 156 as a good alternative for alkaloid analysis (Table 5). The main detector used for alkaloid analysis by SFC is the DAD, which is a versatile, accessible, and lowcost detector.…”

“…In the area of environmental pollution, pharmaceutically active compounds and alkaloids were identified in drinking water from the Budapest region (Hungary) using SFC coupled to MS. 155 This is an interesting approach due to the use of water as a sample. For this, the alkaloids were first retained by solid-phase extraction because of their low concentration, derivatized with dansyl-chloride, and separated by SFC using a BEH analytical column.…”
