Day‐to‐Day Variability in Glomerular Filtration Rate in Normal Dogs by Scintigraphic Technique

Abstract: The sources of variability in variability of scintigraphic measurements of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) have not been determined. The day to day variability of GFR was studied in 18 healthy beagle dogs. The renal uptake of 99mTc-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) of each dog was measured using a scintigraphic technique three times at intervals of 5-26 days. GFR was calculated from a regression equation relating uptake to plasma clearance, derived in our laboratory. The mean GFR was 3.97 +/- 0.72 (SD… Show more

“…due to mechanical pressure applied to the device [14], but also from known day-to-day variability of GFR. Day-to-day variability is most pronounced in healthy animals with normal renal reserve capacity and caused by adaption of kidneys to issues like food intake (protein), hydration status or blood pressure or renal blood flow [26]. Therefore, the observed differences in CV between the strains can be explained at least in parts by inter-strain differences in the renal reserve capacity.…”

“…However, this difference may be due to intra-dog daily variations in GFR rather than a result of the radionuclide technique itself (Kampa et al, 2003). Additional studies are needed to determine why these differences exist and which radionuclide is best suited for GFR measurement in dogs and/or cats.…”

“…However, this is not reasonable. For one thing, CL varies physiologically in time [42]. Moreover, as per the previous section, \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$ CL_{total} $$\end{document} likely varies during a bolus experiment.…”
