Daylight photodynamic therapy: The Southern California experience

Abstract: In this case series, daylight PDT achieved obvious improvement in photodamage, specifically precancerous lesions, and in photoaging with a reduction in lentigenes and other signs of aging. Patients reported significantly less pain than with conventional PDT and enjoyed the convenience of treatment generally in their backyard. It was noted to be a safe procedure with no significant adverse events such as scarring. Additionally, the cost of the procedure was significantly reduced, with ALA and its application be… Show more

“…Furthermore, due to the above mentioned reduction in PpIX accumulation obtained with the protocols for daylight PDT, patients enrolled in these two trials reported less pain during the protocols for daylight PDT than during the conventional protocol for Aktilite CL 128 PDT [11,16]. This experience of a nearly pain-free treatment for patients has also been reported in other studies on daylight PDT [12][13][14][15][32][33][34].…”

“…Since the early work of Wiegell et al , many studies on daylight PDT for the treatment of AK have been published . Application of a chemical sunscreen to the treatment area to prevent sunburn, followed by a maximum of 30 minutes of MAL incubation and no excess cream removal before exposure to daylight for 2 hours, was adopted as the so‐called international consensus protocol for daylight PDT from a European consensus in 2012 .…”

“…PDT is an attractive minimally invasive treatment option. Furthermore, the recent advent of daylight-mediated PDT for topical PDT, reduces the medical costs, making it an even more attractive treatment option [7][8][9]. Currently, porfimer sodium (Photofrin Ò ), 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) (Levulan Ò ) and its methyl ester (MAL) (Metvix Ò ), Visudyne Ò and Foscan Ò are the most commonly used FDA-approved photosensitizers (PS) however, other promising types of PS include chlorins, phthalocyanines and naphthodianthrones [4,[10][11][12].…”
