Digital watermarking is considered one of the most promising techniques to verify the authenticity and integrity of digital data. It is used for a wide range of applications, e.g., copyright protection, tamper detection, traitor tracing, maintaining the integrity of data, etc. In the past two decades, a wide range of algorithms for relational database watermarking has been proposed. Even though a number of surveys exist in the literature, they are unable to provide insightful guidance to choose the right watermarking technique for a given application. In this paper, we provide an exhaustive empirical study and thorough comparative analysis of various relational database watermarking techniques in the literature. Our work is different from the existing survey papers as we consider both distortion-based and distortion-free techniques along with a rigorous experimental analysis demonstrating a detailed comparison on robustness, data usability, and computational cost with considerable empirical evidence. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Patna. Before joining IIT Patna, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher with Macquarie University, Australia. He worked with the Robotics Team at HASLab (University of Minho), Portugal, in 2016. Prior to his Ph.D. degree, he had also worked as an Associate System Engineer at IBM India Private Ltd., from 2007 to 2008. His research interests include formal methods, blockchain technology, program analysis and verification, and data privacy and security.

In this article, we propose a new lossless or reversible watermarking approach that allows the embedding of a message within categorical data of relational database. The reversibility property of our scheme is achieved by adapting the well known histogram shifting modulation. Based on this algorithm we derive a system for verifying the integrity of the database content, it means detecting addition, removal or modification of any t-uples or attributes. Such a content integrity check is independent of the manner the database is stored or structured. We illustrate the overall capability of our method and its constraints of deployment considering one medical database of inpatient hospital stay records. Especially, we reversibly watermark ICD-10 diagnostic codes.

A New Watermarking Algorithm for Relational Database Copyright Protection

In order to enhance the robustness of database watermark, a watermarking algorithm for relational database copyright protection is proposed. Some types of data are selected from the relational database according to filtering rules, and two-dimension signal is formed. Then, the watermarking is embedded into the wavelet domain of two-dimension signal. We analyze that the wavelet high frequency coefficients of corresponding data follow the Gauss distribution and give the definition of the intensive factor. Employing the linear correlation detecting method, we can embed the watermark successfully in wavelet domain. The watermark can be distributed to different parts of the relational database. Experimental results show that the embedded digital watermarks with the proposed algorithm are invisible and some degree of robustness against the commonly used database processing techniques.
