Decalactone Production by Yarrowia lipolytica under increased O2 Transfer Rates

Abstract: Yarrowia lipolytica converts methyl ricinoleate to c-decalactone, a high-value fruity aroma compound. The highest amount of 3-hydroxy-c-decalactone produced by the yeast (263 mg l -1 ) occurred by increasing the k L a up to 120 h )1 at atmospheric pressure; above it, its concentration decreased, suggesting a predominance of the activity of 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase. Cultures were grown under high-pressure, i.e., under increased O 2 solubility, but, although growth was accelerated, c-decalactone productio… Show more

“…x 0 =3 mm) (exp. IV in Figure 3) was reduced to about 50% of that obtained in traditional scale-down systems, such as ST bioreactors (Aguedo et al 2005) or shake flasks. This was confirmed with further experiments carried out at the same conditions (data not shown).…”

“…In the present case this is beneficial to the metabolism of Y. lipolytica which is a strictly aerobic yeast species. O 2 also indirectly participates in the metabolic pathway leading to the formation of the lactone (peroxisomal b-oxidation), however, no direct relation between oxygen supply and the rate of c-decalactone production was evidenced (Aguedo et al 2005).…”

“…The biotechnological production of c-decalactone, a fruity-like aroma compound, results from the biotransformation of ricinoleic acid and it can be carried out by several microorganisms, among which the dimorphic yeast Yarrowia lipolytica (Aguedo et al 2005a).…”
