Deciphering business ecosystem capabilities of the emerging electric vehicle industry

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to propose a comprehensive research framework seeking to decipher the evolutionary development of emerging business ecosystems and to identify the necessary strategic capabilities which enable the transformation of business ecosystems from one stage to the next along its life-cycle. Initial findings from exploratory case studies of the EV industry in Chinese Shandong Province show that the EV Business ecosystem emerged from a network of connected entrepreneurs to its current nascent st… Show more

“…Instability and uncertainty in some industries can hinder innovation, especially in the first stages where it is possible that knowledge diversity is needed. This requires different inter-organisational relationships than those employed in more stable environments, in order to gain access to appropriate knowledge (Shang, 2014).…”

“…The influence of the “environment” can either be the region, the industry or the technology the company employs or its evolutionary stage. This in turn influences the stability of the network, whether it is stable and mature, or unstable and developing (Rong et al , 2010; Shang, 2014). Instability and uncertainty in some industries can hinder innovation, especially in the first stages where it is possible that knowledge diversity is needed.…”

“…Knowledge, as well as its sharing, is one of the most important resources as it enables firms to develop new capabilities and innovations, making its dissemination within the ecosystem vital (Wulf & Butel, 2016). The individual knowledge of each firm is an integral part of the ecosystem and can be leveraged through the collaborative capacity among companies (Shang, Chang, & Shi, 2012). The greater the aggregated knowledge and its sharing among members, the stronger the ecosystem becomes, and the faster it develops through its lifecycle (Song, Chen, & Ganguly, 2020).…”
