Decision Support System Applications for Scheduling in Professional Team Sport. The Team's Perspective

Abstract: Background: Periodization implies the systematic planning of training and competition with the goal of reaching the best possible performance in the most important competition. In team sports, this consists of finding a flight-and-practice schedule that maximizes the opportunities to perform the periodized contents (e.g., trips, practices, games, and days off). This process is conducted whilst considering known constraints (e.g., competitive schedule, roster availability, weather, especial events, holidays, or… Show more

“…Current research into the use of acute preparation strategies largely focuses on individual modalities (i.e., exercise, nutrition, psychology, etc.) and their impact on performance, with the decision to implement such strategies often determined by factors such as logistics, resources, personal coach preference, and philosophy, or the level of competition (32). To date, however, there is no known research that has investigated the integration of these strategies and how they are collectively applied on the day of competition.…”

“…To date, however, there is no known research that has investigated the integration of these strategies and how they are collectively applied on the day of competition. Specific game day factors, such as the game time or match location, can also influence the decision to implement acute strategies (32). An example of this is in travelling teams where access to quality nutrition, unfamiliar sleep environments, and changes to psychological preparation can influence competition performance (13).…”

“…12 Coaches’ inaccurate self-awareness of their practice goals 13,14 highlight the relevance of monitoring training. Categorization of practice 1517 and technical solutions for systematic data gathering 18,19 have shown promise. However, there have been few attempts to systemize the tracking of training data into game performance.…”
