Decomposition of Collaborative Surveillance Tasks for Execution in Marine Environments by a Team of Unmanned Surface Vehicles

Abstract: This paper introduces an approach for decomposing exploration tasks among multiple unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in congested regions. In order to ensure effective distribution of the workload, the algorithm has to consider the effects of the environmental constraints on the USVs. The performance of a USV is influenced by the surface currents, risk of collision with the civilian traffic, and varying depths due to tides and weather. The team of USVs needs to explore a certain region of the harbor and we need… Show more

“…Multi-robot systems are increasingly being used to automate complex missions. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Many such missions are collections of spatially separated tasks that are executed by multi-robot teams in parallel. Generally, these missions may encounter unexpected situations that can halt or alter mission tasks.…”

“…Compared to a single unmanned surface vehicle (USV), the multi-USV system has numerous advantages, such as the high robustness, fault tolerance, good adaptability, and high efficiency of task execution. Therefore, the multi-USV system has broad application prospects in various areas, such as seabed surveying, rescue, material transportation, and target protection [1][2][3][4].…”
