Decoupling of morphological disparity and taxonomic diversity during the end-Permian mass extinction

Abstract: An increasing number of unexpectedly diverse benthic communities are being reported from microbially precipitated carbonate facies in shallow-marine platform settings after the end-Permian mass extinction. Ostracoda, which was one of the most diverse and abundant metazoan groups during this interval, recorded its greatest diversity and abundance associated with these facies. Previous studies, however, focused mainly on taxonomic diversity and, therefore, left room for discussion of paleoecological significance… Show more

“…Such decoupled changes in taxonomic diversity and morphological disparity can suggest different proxies for understanding the ecological impact of an extinction event for example (Wan et al . 2021). Morphological disparity of trilobites has been extensively documented in the Cambrian and the Ordovician (Foote 1991 a ; Smith & Lieberman 1999; Webster 2007; Hopkins 2013; Jacobs & Carlucci 2019).…”

“…Particularly, morphological disparity may unveil hidden evolutionary patterns and causalities (Deline, 2021;Deline et al, 2018;Nel et al, 2018) through the insight into the relative importance of genomic and ecological factors in macroevolution (Foote, 1997). The study of the relationship of disparity vs species diversity may reveal interesting evolutionary correlations and causalities particularly, when the objects are difficult to observe (Copilaș-Ciocianu & Sidorov, 2021;Triantis et al, 2016) or not anymore, such as in fossils (e.g., Neige, 2003;Nel et al, 2018;Ruta et al, 2013;Wan et al, 2021).…”

“…So far, landmark‐based geometric morphometrics has rarely been applied to the Palaeozoic ostracods (but see Wan et al . 2021 for a case study). In this study, we integrate both landmarks and semi‐landmarks for the quantification of ostracod shape.…”
