Decrease in current perception thresholds of A-beta fibers by subthreshold noise stimulation using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

Abstract: Developing effective supplements and rehabilitation of the impaired tactile and proprioception sensation is a significant challenge. One potential method for improving these sensations in clinical practice is using stochastic resonance with white noise. While transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a simple method, the effect of subthreshold noise stimulation via TENS on sensory nerve thresholds is currently unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether subthreshold TENS can alter afferent ner… Show more

“…This is why clinicians need to gain a clear understanding of the patient's pain experience and beliefs about pain, encouraging patients to pursue the rehabilitation path. There are various non-pharmacological interventions that can be used to alleviate pain [94]. In most cases, the appropriate use of OMT, VR, or NIBS and/or other physical and psychological However, these two aspects are less commonly investigated in the neurological population.…”

“…For example, most of the approaches discussed can modulate nociceptive signaling, influencing psychological and emotional aspects of stress and pain and limiting central sensitization underlying CP, while also promoting neuroplasticity in some cases. However, the heterogeneity of CP conditions and the individual response to treatment highlights the need to tailor rehabilitation protocols, considering the role of CP [94].…”

“…At the peripheral level, TENS activates large myelinated Aβ fibers which inhibit nociceptive transmission in small Aδ and C fibers according to the gate control theory. This relies on presynaptic inhibition of nociceptive input at the dorsal horn [ 51 , 52 ]. Molecular studies show TENS modulates the expression and activity of key pain-related ion channels on peripheral nerves, including voltage-gated sodium channels, TRP channels, inhibiting excitability and neurotransmission in nociceptor [ 53 , 54 ].…”
