Deep-sea nematodes (Comesomatidae) from the Southwest Pacific Ocean: five new species and three new species records

“…The platforms of the South American continent at that time were continuous northward along both coasts (actual Chile and Argentina) and nearer to Antarctica and New Zealand than at present (Stock & Molnar 1987). This could explain the high similarities in free-living nematode genera found on both sides of South America, especially between Chile and Argentina (Pastor de Ward 1987; Lo Russo 2013; Villares 2014) and recently in some new records found in the abyssal plains of New Zealand and in the Beagle Channel (Leduc 2012(Leduc , 2013. Recent molecular studies (Derycke et al 2013) suggest that historical processes and biogeographic barriers have strongly affected the genetic variation of marine nematode populations.…”

“…Comesomatids are among the most abundant nematodes in continental margin sediments (Jensen 1979). A total of 23 species have been described/recorded from New Zealand waters, 15 of which have not been recorded elsewhere (Leduc & Gwyther 2008;Leduc 2012;Leduc et al 2012b;Leduc 2013;Leduc et al 2014). Until this study, one Vasostoma and ten Sabatieria species have been described from the region.…”

“…250 to 3,000 m. Samples were collected from Chatham Rise during NIWA cruise TAN0705 (March–April 2007) and TAN1103 (February 2011) under Special Permit 666 granted to NIWA by the Ministry for Primary Industries. Sediment samples were collected and processed as described in Leduc (2012) , using an Ocean Instruments MC-800A multicorer (core internal diameter = 9.5 cm). Each sample consisted of one subcore of internal diameter 26 mm taken to a depth of 5 cm.…”
