Deep-Water Octocorals (Cnidaria, Anthozoa) from the Galápagos and Cocos Islands. Part 1: Suborder Calcaxonia

Abstract: Thirteen species of deep-water calcaxonian octocorals belonging to the families Primnoidae, Chrysogorgiidae, and Isididae collected from off the Galápagos and Cocos Islands are described and figured. “…nov. However, the new species differs distinctly from C. midas Cairns, 2018 by the tree-shaped colony (vs. bottlebrush-shaped), wider orthostiche interval (50-65 mm vs. 12-18 mm), larger polyps (2.0-4.0 mm vs. 1.1 mm), and the presence of various shapes of scales at the body bases (vs. absence). “…With the recent synonymy of Fanellia with Callogorgia, the genus now contains 38 species (Cairns & Wirshing 2018, Cairns 2018. A key to the 22 Indo-Pacific species was recently published by Cairns (2018). Discussions of the genus are included in Cairns & Bayer (2009) and Cairns (2018).…”

“…Nonetheless, some species have broader distributions and thus knowledge of the entire Pacific primnoid fauna is essential. Although not exhaustive, significant revisions of the Pacific primnoid fauna, listed from north to south, include: off Alaska (Nutting 1912, Bayer 1952, Cairns & Baco 2007, Cairns, 2011, Baco & Cairns 2012, Japan (Kinoshita 1908, Nutting 1912, Aurivillius 1931, the Emperor Seamounts , Hawaiian Islands (Nutting 1908, Bayer & Stefani 1989, 2010, Marcus-Necker Ridge (Pasternak 1981), east Pacific seamounts (Nutting 1909, Cairns 2007b, Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (Cairns 2016a), Galápagos and Cocos Islands (Studer 1894, Cairns 2018, New Caledonia (Bayer & Stefani 1989), off New South Wales, Australia (Thomson & Mackinnon 1911), New Zealand (Bayer 1996, 2016b, off Chile (Ofwegen et al 2009), and other general localities (Studer 1878, Wright & Studer 1889, Versluys 1906, Kükenthal 1919, Cairns & Bayer 2009.…”
