Deferoxamine–paper for iron(III) and vanadium(V) sensing

Abstract: The development of a sensor based on the functionalization of common filter paper with deferoxamine (DFO) is proposed with the prospect to produce a solid phase for iron(III) and vanadium(V) sensing. The main features of this sensor are the simplicity of operation, good sensitivity and feasible applicability to real samples without the need of pre-treatment procedures. DFO was selected not only for it is easily anchored to the solid support, but also because it forms colored complexes with iron(III) and vanadi… Show more

“…K * can be calculated by independent experiments, as described in numerous papers concerning the sorption of metal ions on chelating resins, (see for example Alberti et al, 2014aAlberti et al, , 2007Biesuz et al, 2008;Pesavento et al, 2003) and specifically for iron(III) on DFO SAMMS in Biesuz et al (2014). In this last paper, we verified that the sorption of iron(III) on this solid takes place by the formation of the complex FeðHDFOÞ, with log b ex = 40(1).…”

“…Alberti et al [ 69 ] described a functionalized paper with deferoxamine (DFO) for sensing Fe(III) and V(V) in natural waters. DFO is selected thanks to the possibility of linking it on the paper and because its complexes with Fe(III) and V(V) are colored, thus a simple colorimetric sensor is prepared.…”

“…Moreover, the triacetylcellulose film can be used as porous support for colorimetric sensors. Tavallali’s and Safavi groups of two Iranian Universities developed several triacetylcellulose-based disposable optical sensors for metal ions, using, as starter material, waste photographic film tapes, immobilizing on the membrane different dyes [ 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 , 95 ]. All these studies adopted the same procedure to prepare the sensors.…”

“…We have already developed optical devices for metal ions, using several different solid materials, for instance, chelating resins, triacetylcellulose membrane, and filter paper. Specifically for Fe(III), we studied different strategies, synthesizing polymers or linking each different selective ligands to natural or commercially available supports Biesuz 2014;Alberti 2015;Vallejos 2016;Biesuz 2018).…”
