“…Whether a bilingual (dis)advantage was observed rests on the defining characteristics of these groups. As reported in previous research, there is a wide range of defining characteristics across research involving bilinguals (Rocha-Hidalgo & Barr, 2022;Surrain & Luk, 2019). The diverse defining characteristics (e.g., onset age of second language acquisition, frequency of use of multiple languages) across studies are not a sign of any research wrongdoing.…”

“…Studies should also provide explicit information about the process by which a child's exposure to multiple languages is determined. Failure to include this information limits the ability of the field to draw firm conclusions about relations between exposure and differences between monolingual and bilingual vocabulary acquisition (see Rocha-Hidalgo & Barr, 2022). We recommend that researchers and clinicians take advantage of the many instruments available to quantify bilingual exposure.…”

“…Participants can therefore self-categorize as monolingual or multilingual (e.g., Kaushanskaya et al, 2020). However, language experience for young children is defined in terms of exposure quotients to environmental languages, an approach that has been widely validated by prior work (e.g., Rocha-Hidalgo & Barr, 2022). We therefore developed categories and suggested constructs befitting studies of early childhood.…”
