SAE ABSTRACTAn important benefit in adopting multi-mode hybrid powertrains is the possibility of downsizing the electric motor/generator (M/G) units. This paper discusses design optimization of M/G full-load operation envelopes. A three-dimensional operation space analysis is introduced and the full-load speed-torque envelopes of M/G units appear as constraints in the powertrain operation space. The analysis shows how the change in the M/G characteristics affects the powertrain full-load performance and how the M/G units can be downsized by combining multiple modes. When the acceleration performance of a two-mode hybrid vehicle is estimated using this analysis method, the trade-off between enhancing performance and reducing M/G fullload capacities is formulated as an optimization problem. The results show significant improvement in dynamic performance at reduced M/G cost.

Abstract:In recent years, increasing concerns regarding environmental pollution and requirements for lower fossil fuel consumption have increased interest in alternative hybrid powertrains. As a result, this paper presents a novel hydraulic/electric synergy powertrain with multiple working modes. The three energy sources (i.e., engine, battery, and hydraulic accumulator) in this configuration are regulated by a dual planetary gear set to achieve optimal performances. This paper selects the component sizes of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), a hydraulic hybrid vehicle (HHV), and a hydraulic/electric synergy vehicle (HESV), based on the dynamic performance of a target vehicle (TV). In addition, this paper develops the forward simulation models of the four aforementioned vehicles in the MATLAB/Simulink/Driveline platform, in which the fuel economy simulations are carried out in relation to the Chinese urban bus cycle. The simulation results show that the fuel consumption of the three hybrid vehicles is similar, but much better than, that of the TV. Finally, based on the operating cost calculations over a five-year working period, the lowest cost ranges of the three hybrid vehicles are determined, which provides a method for choosing the optimal hybrid scheme.

The topic of split‐path transmissions, by whatever name, has been well established in some mobile vehicle sectors and has more recently spread into the automobile and light vehicle segments. This chapter describes the concepts and potential advantages of using a continuously variable transmission system with more than one path between input and output. The basic concept is introduced and the simplest configurations to split the power flow are discussed. There is a detailed review of the analysis of the simple epicyclic gear in the form that is most amenable for split‐path analysis. This leads into an analysis and presentation of the main characteristics of split‐path transmissions using a single epicyclic gear. The most advantageous regions of operation are identified and representative implementations in the automobile sector using different variators are described. Attention is drawn to possible component speed and torque limits and the inclusion of some allowance for variator efficiency. The extension of the technique to the use of more than one epicyclic gear is introduced, and the difference in characteristics from a single epicyclic is identified. Reference is made to some implementations of these configurations, including multimode systems.
