Defining the Genetic Basis of Plant–Endophytic Bacteria Interactions

Abstract: Endophytic bacteria, which interact closely with their host, are an essential part of the plant microbiome. These interactions enhance plant tolerance to environmental changes as well as promote plant growth, thus they have become attractive targets for increasing crop production. Numerous studies have aimed to characterise how endophytic bacteria infect and colonise their hosts as well as conferring important traits to the plant. In this review, we summarise the current knowledge regarding endophytic colonisa… Show more

“…The data on in vitro bacterial-fungal dual-inoculations as well as plant biomass and leaf area from the growth enhancement experiments were analyzed in R 3.5.1 (Team RC 2019). Data distributions were evaluated with the fitdistrplus package (Delignette-Muller and Dutang 2015) and linear or linear mixed-effects models (nlme R package) (Pinheiro et al 2019), when necessary, were created. After graphical validation of homogeneity assumption, ANOVA test was carried out on the generated models, followed by pairwise comparisons (Tukey's method, P = 0.05) calculated by Estimated Marginal Means (emmeans R package) (Lenth 2019).…”

“…Bacterial traits enabling life in the endosphere Several bacterial traits enable life in the plant endosphere (Compant et al, 2010;Pinski et al, 2019). Lipopolysaccharides, flagella, pili, and twitching motility (Duijff et al, 1997, Dörr et al, 1998, Böhm et al, 2007Tadra-Sfeir et al, 2011) have been linked to endophytic colonization and are also important for rhizosphere competence (Compant et al, 2010).…”

“…For years, plant-associated bacteria have been speculated to be the organisms capable of promoting growth and/or suppressing diseases when present in the rhizosphere and as endophytes within healthy plant tissues [1,2]. Leguminous plants have the capability to associate with rhizobia by the nodulation process and fix atmospheric nitrogen (N) in the root nodule.…”
