Deforestation and Changes in Landscape Patterns from 1979 to 2006 in Suan County, DPR Korea

Abstract: Abstract:The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPR Korea) suffered considerable upland deforestation during the 1990s, yet its consequences remain relatively unknown. This paper examines this deforestation and resulting land-use change patterns by analysis of Landsat satellite images from 1979, 1992, 2001 and 2006 in Suan County, Hwanghae Province, DPR Korea. Results show that there has been significant closed canopy forest loss and a dramatic expansion of agricultural land during this period. Most fores… Show more

“…In the area affected by sea level rise, PLADJ value experienced relatively small fluctuations, but overall decreased in value in the period 2003-2016. Then IJI values show fragmentation levels [38] [33]. The value of IJI in coastal areas of Pekalongan shows that value always decreases.…”

“…Then PD metric is related to the NP, and in the coastal area of Pekalongan, PD value always decreased. It also indicates the increasing fragmentation occurring in the area [33][34] [35][36]. Next comes the results of PLADJ and IJI metrics which are indicative of patch configuration [29].…”

“…The phenomenon has become a contentious issue due to the noticeable decrease in forest areas. North Korean deforestation is a cause for concern because it has not only resulted in a large ecosystem change, but also a decrease in carbon absorption [3,7]. North Korean forests have mostly been converted to croplands.…”

“…Monitoring the trends to which ecosystem is changing by the use of indicators such as land cover and socio-demographic information will be essential in order to make proper planning for sustainable ecosystem management. Nowadays, the advancement of geospatial technology such as RS and geographic information system (GIS) present the best efficient tool for analyzing land cover trends as demonstrated by many researchers [5,6,7,8]. Geospatial technologies in addition to conventional inventories can facilitate quantitative evaluation and provide a baseline for monitoring the extent, impacts and trend of LCC.…”
