Dehydroeffusol inhibits hypoxia-induced epithelial–mesenchymal transition in non-small cell lung cancer cells through the inactivation of Wnt/β-catenin pathway

Abstract: Dehydroeffusol (DHE) is a phenanthrene compound that possesses anti-tumor activity. However, the effect of DHE on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has not been investigated previously. Therefore, the objective of our study was to explore the role of DHE in NSCLC and the underlying mechanism. Our results showed that DHE significantly inhibited the cell viability of A549 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner under normoxic condition. Moreover, A549 cells were more sensitive to DHE under hypoxic condition … Show more

“…Pathways related to tumor signal transduction, such as Wnt, PI3K/AKT or NF-kB, may play an important role in tumor genesis and development. In addition, more and more evidences showed that the typical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is the key signaling pathway involved in the development of various cancers ( 24 32 ). In order to further study the mechanism of TTR on NSCLC tumor progression, we found that the WNT 3A and β-catenin expression levels in Wnt signaling pathway were down-regulated after TTR over-expression.…”

“…Targeting Wnt/β-catenin raises the possibility of developing novel drugs against lung cancer 38 . Hypoxia activates Wnt/β-catenin pathway in non-small cell lung cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma 39,40 . In the current study, hypoxia exposure and PLGF overexpression had similar stimulatory effect on expression of β-catenin in lung cancer cells.…”
