Progress on the identi®cation of new carotenoids over the six years 1993±1999 is reviewed. Carotenoid structures with the normal C 40 skeleton, carotenoid derivatives such as sulfates and glycoside esters, and apocarotenoids from higher plants, marine organisms, bacteria and algae, and metabolites in ®shes and human serum are covered. Whenever possible, comments are made about biosynthetic and biological implications.
