Delay Discounting Mediates Parent–Adolescent Relationship Quality and Risky Sexual Behavior for Low Self-Control Adolescents

Abstract: Parent-adolescent relationship quality and delay discounting may play important roles in adolescents’ sexual decision making processes, and levels of self-control during adolescence could act as a buffer within these factors. This longitudinal study included 219 adolescent (55% male; mean age = 12.66 years at Wave 1; mean age = 15.10 years at Wave 2) and primary caregiver dyads. Structural equation modeling was utilized to determine whether delay discounting mediated the association between parent-adolescent r… Show more

“…Despite high levels of interpersonal conflict, maintaining high-quality relationships with family has important implications for adolescents' mental and physical health (Ehrlich, Hoyt, Sumner, McDade, & Adam, 2015;Kahn, Holmes, Farley, & Kim-Spoon, 2015). Parent-adolescent relationship quality is significantly influenced by such parenting practices as warmth, responsiveness, positive reinforcement, behavioral control, and openness in communication (Kahn, et al, 2015;Kearney & Bussey, 2014).…”

“…Although there has been limited literature examining self-control development across both childhood and adolescence, it is expected that higher self-control in childhood and pre-adolescence may help deter this neurobiological susceptibility to risk taking in adolescence. Indeed, a wide array of adolescent research has emphasized the important role of self-control for youth risk-taking behaviors, including substance use and risky sexual behaviors (e.g., Kahn, Holmes, Farley, & Kim-Spoon, 2015; Magar, Phillips, & Hosie, 2008; Romer et al, 2011). …”

“…Hutchinson 2002, Whitaker & Miller (2000) explained that parents give more powerful influence on adolescent sexual behaviors than what was suspected earlier. Several guidance processes identified have influenced adolescent sexual behaviors, such as: parentadolescent intimacy (Jaccard, Ditus, & Gordon, 1998;Sandhu, Kaur, & Bhatt, 2017), parental monitoring (Siverding, Adler, Witt, & Ellen, 2005), parental involvement (Barman-Adhikari et al, 2014), and parentadolescent sexual communication (Kahn, Holmes, Christopher, Farley, & Kim-Spoon, 2015;Rich, Robertson, & Wilson, 2014;Thoma&Hubner, 2014;Widman, Bradley, & Helms, 2014;Harris, Sutherland, & Hutchinson, 2013;Somers, Tolia, &Anagurthi, 2012).…”
