Delayed clearance of postprandial chylomicrons and their remnants in the hypoalphalipoproteinemia and mild hypertriglyceridemia syndrome.

Abstract: Hypoalphalipoproteinemia (HPAL) with mild hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is associated with increased coronary artery disease (CAD) risk. The aim of this study was to examine the metabolism of postprandial lipoproteins in HPAL/HTG subjects (n = 21). They had a fasting plasma high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level < 0.9 mmol/l, a triglycerides (TG) level of 2.0-7.1 mmol/l, and a normal low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level (< 3.7 mmol/l). They were either homozygous for apoprotein E3 (n = … Show more

“…Recently, abnormalities of the metabolism of serum lipoproteins, 3,5,9 TG, 4 and TC 6 -8 in the postprandial state have been reported in diabetic patients. It has been demonstrated that higher cholesterol absorption efficiency has been observed in diabetic patients with CHD but not in patients without CHD.…”

“…However, previous investigators using diabetic models have not been able to find a correlation between the postprandial metabolism of serum lipids and severe hyperlipidemia, although postprandial hyperlipidemia (PH) is found in diabetic patients. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] The present study was performed to establish a PH model and to examine the relation between enhanced small intestinal ACAT activity and PH. First, we showed that intestinal ACAT activity was markedly enhanced in STZdiabetic rats in the absence of both a high fat diet and hyperplasia in the gut.…”

“…Traditionally, triglycerides (TG)s are measured in the fasting state (8-12 h of fasting) mainly because of the rise in TG levels after meals (leading to high variation in TG values) and because of the calculation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels using the Friedewald equation [1] requires a fasting sample and TG levels <400 mg/dl (4.5 mmol/l) [1]. It is well known that, the long duration of PPL and the number of meals during the day (plus snacks) lead to significant and sustained changes in plasma lipoprotein levels [2,3]. For example, the response of chylomicrons (CM) to a fat meal can vary by up to 60% depending on the amount and quality of fat, carbohydrate and protein content [4,[5][6][7].…”
